Sometimes, You Have to Be a Motherfu**er

People who are successful – those who set goals and achieve them well – are usually motherfu**ers.

To be clear, being a motherfu**er in a certain area means that you have a passionate pursuit of that you wish to attain. Nothing (or very few things) stand in your way. Ben Casnocha points this out when he quotes a book about Michael Jordan. Apparently, Jordan was a motherfu**er. As such, he is the greatest player to ever shoot a basketball. It’s said that his dedication is way better than that of LeBron James. Jordan stayed in Chicago until he could beat the Pistons; he didn’t join them as a free agent. As such, he’s the greatest. Period. End of story.

Lance Armstrong is a motherfu**er on the bike and when fighting cancer. I read an article once, when he was in the prime of his racing days, that quoted him as saying that if he felt he had a really good training day where everything was clicking and where he felt like he accomplished what he wanted to, he’d allow himself to eat a Snickers bar. He wouldn’t let anything that wasn’t beneficial to him winning the Tour de France enter his body. He was that committed. Motherfu**er.

What are you willing to be a motherfu**er in ? What are you willing to be the best at? Apple is a motherfu**er at building gadgets that delight us. Wal-Mart is a motherfu**er at selling cheap goods to all of us. What is that you relentlessly pursue? What could your company be a motherfu**er at? What should it be a motherfu**er at? What does your brand stand for? Anything?

It’s better to be seen as a motherfu**er at something than to play it safe and be okay at everything.

Fair warning: You can’t (and shouldn’t) be a motherfu**er at everything. No one will like you then. You’ll just be a motherfu**er. Period. We’d all rather you be a motherfu**er at something. Then, we can stand to be around you when we have a drink together.

Weigh in: Who else (or what else) is a motherfu**er at something? Who (or what) is so committed to what they do that they’ll eschew all else in pursuit of it?
